Portuguese tiles - Walking Tour and workshop

Today you will meet your private guide for an insider’s look at Lisbon’s architecture, with a special focus on its vibrant decorative tiles.

The experience begins with a walk through historic neighborhoods, where late 19th-century tiled façades decorate entire streets, creating one of Lisbon’s most distinctive urban landscapes. Along the way, you will also step inside selected churches to admire richly decorated interiors, where tiles play an important role in storytelling and ornamentation.

As you explore, your guide will explain the evolution of Portuguese tilework and its most important decorative styles, shaped by artistic influences from across the former Portuguese Empire.

During the walk, you will enjoy a tasting of fresh local pastries and a coffee before arriving at a traditional tile atelier for an approximately one and a half hour hands-on workshop. Under the guidance of a master painter, you will learn key techniques — brush strokes, color mixing, and composition — and create your own design on a blank ceramic tile.

After painting, your tile will be glazed and kiln-fired (a process that takes one to two days), then delivered directly to your hotel once ready, leaving you with a unique memory of the city.
